Australia: the basics
- The ATO treats crypto as a CGT asset, not as currency.
- Selling, swapping, spending and gifting crypto are generally CGT events.
- Staking rewards and airdrops are generally ordinary income when you receive them.
- The Australian financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June.
- The 50% CGT discount applies to eligible gains on assets held for 12 months or more. From 1 July 2027 it is replaced by cost base indexation and a 30% minimum tax, with transitional rules. See our guide for details.
United States: the basics
- The IRS treats digital assets as property.
- Disposals are generally reported on Form 8949 and summarised on Schedule D.
- Gains on assets held for more than one year are generally long-term. Otherwise they are short-term.
- Net capital losses can generally offset up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year, with the rest carried forward.
